Our
Mission
Since 1980 the
Office of Concern has been dedicated to serving “the poorest
of the poor” in our local area. We aim to supplement their
food, clothing, and basic needs of everyday life.
Our
Outreach
Our families include the
working poor, retirees, and those struggling to feed babies
and small children. Over 500 families are registered to
receive food and over 400 come every month, totaling about
1,200 people. Approximately thirty-five percent are children
and ten percent are seniors. In 2009 we distributed 163 tons
of food… over 3 tons per week… making us one of the largest
food pantries in Bergen Country!
Our
Programs
Nutritional Program
– We distribute bags of non-perishable grocery items every
week. The following are distributed when available: Meat –
often chickens, turkeys are given out at Thanksgiving; Dairy
Products – Margarine, milk, eggs, cheese; and Bakery Items –
bread, rolls, cake.
Hygiene Program –
An item such as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste is given weekly.
Diaper Program – Diapers are given weekly to families
with infants.
Eligibility
We help the needy
regardless of any religion, race, or culture. All those in
need will receive an emergency supply of food. No appointment
or social service referral is necessary. To receive food on a
weekly basis requires that family income fall below U.S.
Government poverty levels.
Our
Resources
We operate through the
generosity of foundations, businesses, churches, schools,
community organizations, and individuals.
Contributions
include in-kind items such as food and clothing, grants,
supermarket gift cards, and monetary donations. All
contributions are tax deductible. We are associated with the
Community Food Bank of New Jersey and participate in federal
USDA and New Jersey state SFPP food programs.
Additional Endeavors
Clothing – We
accept and distribute donations of new or gently used clothing
on a limited basis.
Homeless and Nurturing
Centers – We donate to nearby centers caring for needy
children and the homeless when possible.
Christmas Toy Drive –
We conduct an annual toy drive in an effort to supply at
least one toy to each child.
What
Makes us Unique
We distribute food
four days per week! Every week we give out non-perishable
food as well as meat, dairy, fresh produce, hygiene products,
and diapers. Most other food pantries give out only
food and distribute only one day per month!
